Character Name: Jade Harley
Series: Homestuck
Timeline: ~2 years into the ship trip across the Yellow Yard, post Davesprite-breakup (Not too long after this page.)
Canon Resource Link: You can’t have fun in lava. You can only die in lava.
Character Background: Jade was created through ectobiology and sent back in time to her island, to be taken care of by her adopted Grandfather (who was actually her father because of the science that created her). The location of Jade’s island is unknown, and she had mentioned in canon that she “didn’t even know if she was an American citizen”, but it is suspected it exists somewhere near the Phoenix Islands in the mid-Pacific. Her grandfather died when she was very young and so she was raised by her dog, Bec, alone in her island. Bec was actually a First Guardian, a superpowered guardian of Earth with powers from the Green Sun to teleport, among other things. Bec used this power to make sure Jade didn’t get hurt as a child.
Jade spent her childhood terraforming the island, growing flora and fauna along with meeting and talking to her friends on the internet, John, Rose, and Dave. She spent a lot of her time asleep from narcoleptic fits (which was later revealed to have been caused by Vriska) and on Prospit, awakened much before the session. Using the Prospitan clouds, she was able to predict the future for her and her friends to a certain extent. She also had a Dreambot, built by her grandfather before his death, giving Jade the ability to do things in her sleep.
After bringing Dave into the game as his client player, she spent most of her time asleep, trying to wake John up on Prospit and stopping Dersite agents from stealing the White Queen’s ring while she waited to be brought into the game. However, Jack Noir, a dersite agent, went rouge and cut Prospit’s moon from its base planet, and in trying to save John’s dreamself from being crushed when the moon fell to Skaia, she sacrificed her dreamself in order to save him. When her dreamself died, her dreambot exploded in her home in the medium, sending Jade falling into the snow. Bec managed to catch her, and she went back to sleep again.
In her first sleep she accidentially saw the furthest ring and a dead Feferi, foreshadowing some darker things to come. She also speaks to Karkat. While it’s been implied Jade has interacted with the trolls in the past (she has all 12 of the trolls handles on her pesterchum, despite three of the trolls never contacting the kids) this is where she really begins interaction with them in the context of the story. (Once she gets into the Medium, she is contacted by Tavros, who, upon revealing he was the one who killed her grandfather (thinking he was a trespasser due to troll culture and believing Bec was her lusus), she refused to speak to him again.) Finally, Jade went to enter the Medium, but when John went to prototype her kernelsprite, Vriska intervened and made him fall asleep. Instead, in order to save her, Bec prototyped himself and destroyed the meteor coming to destroy Jade’s island. Using Bec’s assistance, she was able to destroy her cruxite item (a piñata Bec that she had to destroy blindfolded) and made it into the Medium to her planet, the Land of Frost and Frogs.
Upon arrival and being introduced to normal dreams, which she did not enjoy, Jade alchemized a pile of useful things and prototyped her sprite a second time, with the dead body of her dreamself (that had ended up at her home through “shenanigans”), creating Jadesprite. It was revealed that Jade’s dreamself was much more immature, having only experienced the golden paths of Prospit and its happiness and having not experienced many hardships. Jade got into a fight with her and she disappeared; she was quickly confronted by Karkat, pointing out her hypocrisy that Jade hated her other self, but she had stopped him from yelling at his past self earlier. He also told her a message from her future self, to turn off and capachalouge the Fourth Wall in her room.
After this she began talking to Kanaya for experience on frog breeding, since her sprite ran off and couldn’t give her the information she needed. Beginning to breed the Genesis Frog, she took over communication and basic leadership after Rose went Grimdark. Using Dave’s time powers, she was able to breed many frogs in an incredibly short amount of time. However, she was also introduced to Bec Noir, the rogue dersite agent that had got ahold of the Black Queen’s ring, had been subject to the prototyping of the sprites, and had a part of Bec still inside of him. Because of this, he could not bring himself to kill Jade. However, when he came close on LOFAF, she shot at him, and he used his Green Sun space powers to redirect the bullets and killed Dave. She revived him, to his dreamself, with a kiss.
The kids decided they were going to try to Scratch the session, now that they had an unbeatable villain. She went to her denizen, Echidna, and made a deal that she would reveal the final frog to breed the Genesis Frog if Jade brought all the denizens with her to the new session they would head to. She agreed, and went to breed the next frog. Bec Noir was continuing to hang around, but due to his loyalty, could not kill her. However, Clubs Deuce was instructed to drop a bomb of shaving cream right into the Forge on her planet, and the resulting explosion killed her. Bec Noir, heartbroken, took Jade to her Quest Bed on her planet, where she passed. Because she died on her Quest Bed, however, she went God Tier. Going God Tier required that she merged with her dream self; however, her dream self was prototyped with Bec, which was then prototyped into Jade. Because of this, when she went God Tier, she also inherited Bec’s ears and powers of space related to the Green Sun as well as her God Tier space powers. Lifting a Prospitan Ship, she shrunk all the planets down to size (to bring the denizens with her), collected John, expanded the Fourth Wall from her inventory, and smashed the ship right through it, on the way to their new session.
Jade revealed that in order to get to the new session, she, John, the other sprites on the ship (Davesprite, Jaspersprite, and Nannasprite), and all the consorts and imps, would have to cross the Yellow Yard, actually located in Hussie’s office. This journey would take three years, traveling at basically the speed of light. Since then, she’s been flying the Prospitan Ship.
Two years into this trip, she is seen with John watching Con Air for his birthday; she gets into an argument with him over Con Air, trying to get him to calm down from his rage. It’s also revealed that she and Davesprite had been dating, but he wouldn’t make an appearance at John’s 15th birthday party because they recently broken up. Instead, he left a note on John’s hood much like his Dad once did. John went into a fit, running into the driveway and yelling at the sky before passing out asleep. Jade left him there, out of inability to know what to do with him. Not too long after that, she was taken into the Mansion.
Abilities/Special Powers: As a god tier player, Jade can’t die normally; if she were to be killed randomly, she would just come back to life. In order to die permanently, it needs to be a “just” or “heroic” death, seeming to be determined by a clock in Doc Scratch’s office. Being a Witch of Space, she can grow and shrink objects, people, and supposedly just about anything. In canon, she’s been shown to grow a ship to enormous size, shrink entire planets to fit in the palm of her hand, and grow a window she was keeping in her pocket to a big enough size to fit an entire boat through only a fourth of it. Hussie notes in canon that she is now so powerful, that no one should mess with her, “not even him”.
Additionally, when Jade went God Tier, she became prototyped with her Dream Self, which also contained her guardian doc, Bec. Because of this, Jade is part dog, and has two white dog ears on the top of her head. She’s been shown to exhibit dog-like actions, such as chasing cats and barking. Her abilities from Bec also allow her to teleport and move at the speed of light, but since those powers are related to the Green Sun (and it has been stated in-canon that the farther one goes from the Green Sun the more these powers are weakened) it’s doubtful she’ll be able to use them in-game. (Let me know if it would be possible vs. not, mods!)
She also happens to be a skilled markswoman and her strife specibus, riflekind, allows her to use any manner of rifle in a skilled manner. In order to get into the medium she had to shoot a small piñata item blindfolded, showing Jade’s skill with a gun. She is also shown to be very smart with an interest in science and especially physics, along with gardening, and has also been shown to rock a bass solo.
Third-Person Sample: Jade sat at the window of the Prospitan ship, elbows holding up her head as she looked across the cosmos. At first, a three year trip sounded easy! She had always wanted to live with other people, and see her friends in real life, and she talked to John basically every day anyway. Three years together would be fun! And adventure!
And then she was reminded exactly how much of a butt John could be. It had been 9 months now; they had explored the entire ship and all the planets, and all the excitement was gone. Now came the actual part of… trying to live together, and Jade had never realized how much she valued her freedom. Since the time she had gotten onto the ship, John had been all up in her business, and it was hitting them hard that they had both been only children. Bathroom sharing had become an issue (John logically should not even need nearly that much time for the hot mess his hair was every day) and Jade had to start locking her doors for the first time, seeing as John didn’t know how to knock and seemed to inexplicably show up whenever she went to change her bra.
Jade rolled her eyes at the memory, twirling her hair between her finger and letting her ears waggle a bit as she listened to the rest of the ship; she could hear Davesprite in the other room, getting messed with by Jaspersprite. John was across the ship, messing with Casey; she could sniff the bubbles the little salamander was making, and she let out a small grin. It was complicated to live together, but she didn’t mind in the long run. Maybe they needed someone to take care of them, and keep their stuff together. She couldn’t count the amount of times she had to make sure to place was running- and heck, the ship wouldn’t even be going if not for her!
She grinned, straightening up and holding her fist defiantly. That’s right! They needed to respect her! And she needed to take care of them, as much as they needed to take care of her.
... But maybe she’d go sneak up on Jaspersprite, one more time. Make John do a bit of the work too.
